100,000 products and tools made of the strong metals tungsten and molybdenum: This has been our mission and passion for over 100 years, shared by 11,000 employees all over the world.

We at the Plansee Group still have big plans - and we will get even better with you! Become part of our team!

We invite applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of data-assisted computational modelling of particulate multiscale and multiphysics flows in the frame of the newly founded Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows. The PhD project will be conducted at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria in close cooperation with Plansee SE, Reutte, Austria. The position comprises 6 - 8 weeks on-site visits per year at Reutte, Austria.

For this industry-orientend position we are looking for a motivated and curious PhD candidate.

Start Date: January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter

Your tasks:

  • Research in the field of computational modeling of particulate multiscale and multiphysics flows
  • Development of surrogate models (e.g., recurrence CFD) for real-time simulations
  • Contribution to digital process twins for industrial furnaces
  • Addressing fundamental questions in data-assisted modeling to reduce energy consumption and CO₂ emissions
  • Collaboration within the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Data-Assisted Simulations of Complex Flows

Your profile:

  • Master's degree in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Science, or a related field
  • Solid background in classical simulation techniques (e.g., CFD, CFD-DEM)
  • Strong programming skills in at least one scientific computing language
  • Interest in or willingness to learn deep learning or other data-driven modeling methods
  • Beneficial: Experience with machine learning frameworks and physics-based simulations
  • Experimental skills for validation experiments
  • Willingness to conduct on-site visits and talk to responsible people from development and production
  • German language skills desirable

What we offer:

  • A dynamic and supportive research environment in a leading computational modeling group
  • Close cooperation with the industrial partner Plansee SE
